Madrid, August 1 /Xinhua/ — The death toll from the mass crossing of migrants at the border of the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa has risen to 67 people. Spanish authorities stated that the situation at the border has generally stabilized after most of them returned to neighboring Morocco.
On Saturday, the Spanish government announced that none of the nearly 50,000 migrants who had illegally entered Ceuta were allowed to proceed further into mainland Spain. More than 48,000 migrants returned to Morocco within 48 hours, effectively allowing one of the largest illegal migration crises on Spain’s southern border to be brought under control.
On August 1, the Spanish authorities also began installing new maritime barriers in the breakwater zone of Tarajal as part of enhanced border security measures. As stated by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, the system consists of a 500-meter-long inflatable floating barrier with an underwater section extending to a depth of up to one meter, supplemented by a first line of fixed buoys provided by the country’s naval forces. The navigation channel remained open so that Civil Guard patrol boats could continue border monitoring.
According to the Spanish news agency EFE, Moroccan authorities have arrested 70 people in connection with violent incidents related to the migration crisis. An investigation is underway against the suspects on charges including attempted murder, arson, and damage to state and private property as a result of clashes with security forces.
