Yinchuan, July 31 /Xinhua/ — The Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (NHAR, Northwest China) is actively developing its wine industry with an ecological restoration approach, making it the largest wine-producing region in the country.
This Chinese region boasts a unique terroir for producing high-class wines: an abundance of sunlight and a cool, dry climate favor the cultivation of grapes. The eastern foothills of Mount Helanshan have gained special popularity as a “golden zone” for grape growing and high-quality wine production.
For many years, local authorities have aimed to develop the winemaking industry in combination with ecological rehabilitation. A “corridor” of vineyards stretching 195 km was established in the region, allowing barren lands covering more than 26.6 thousand hectares to be turned into lush oases.
In July of this year, a group of foreign students from Russia, Egypt, Argentina, and Cambodia, studying in China, visited one of the wineries in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR).
According to Russian student Valeria Vayner, scientific and technological means are used sensibly here for the sustainable development of the winemaking industry in harsh climatic conditions.
As of the end of 2024, the vineyard area in the NHA exceeded 40 thousand hectares, and the annual wine production volume reached 140 million bottles. Local wine is supplied to more than 40 countries and regions worldwide.
The Chinese /Ningxia/ International Wine Culture and Tourism Exhibition is also held here regularly.
The Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is expanding international cooperation with overseas wine-producing regions. In June 2025, the NHAR and the eastern Georgian region of Kakheti signed a memorandum on establishing friendly interregional relations in Yinchuan city /the administrative center of NHAR/. In the future, these two regions will broaden areas of cooperation, considering the wine industry as a connecting link.
In addition, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is actively promoting the integrated development of the wine-making and tourism industries.
