Beijing, July 22 /Xinhua/ — “Providing consular protection and assistance to Chinese citizens abroad, including compatriots from Taiwan, is our duty,” said Zhang Han, the official spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the PRC, on Wednesday.
At the latest press briefing, the official representative was asked to comment on the assistance provided by the Chinese Consulate General in Irkutsk to Taiwanese tourists who were injured in a road traffic accident near the Irkutsk region.
After receiving the request for assistance, the Consulate General in Irkutsk, despite the late hour, immediately contacted the local hospital to dispatch an ambulance team to the victims; consulate staff also visited the most severely injured tourists, Zhang Han said.
The condition of the victims is stable, she added.
“Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are Chinese,” said Zhang Han. “Wherever our compatriots are, they can count on care and protection from their Motherland.” -0-
