Damascus, July 7 /Xinhua/ — Two explosions rocked downtown Damascus on Tuesday during the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron, injuring 18 people. This was reported by the Syrian Ministry of Interior.
The agency emphasized that the explosions occurred outside the security perimeter established around the French president’s hotel and did not pose a direct threat to either the hotel or the official visit, which continues as scheduled. Among the injured are four police officers.
Shortly after reports of the explosions, state media reported that the President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, received E. Macron at the People’s Palace in Damascus.
The explosions occurred near the Ministry of Tourism building, close to the Four Seasons hotel.
In a statement published by the state news agency SANA, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that security forces discovered two explosive devices, which detonated during preparations for their neutralization.
According to the preliminary investigation, homemade explosive devices were placed in a parked car and in a roadside trash container.
The ministry stated that work is underway on site to ensure public safety. –0–
