Top news of the day at the UN and around the world: children have died as a result of Russian strikes on Ukraine, renewed fighting in Yemen has forced over 250,000 people to flee, the UN’s chief human rights officer has called for dialogue amid protests in Europe, hostages have been freed in the CAR.

Strikes on Ukraine
UNICEF expressed outrage over reports of children killed in a strike on a park in Nova Vodolaha, Kharkiv region, Ukraine. According to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in the country, a drone launched by Russian armed forces struck the park yesterday afternoon when many families were present. Additionally, as reported by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the day before a drone hit a clearly marked vehicle of a partner organization used for evacuating people.
Escalation in Yemen
The renewed military actions in Yemen have already forced more than 250,000 people to flee, the UN reported on Tuesday. Particular concern is raised about the situation of those taking shelter in the city of Taiz in the southwest of the country, as well as in the province of the same name, access to which is effectively blocked. About half of those who were forced to leave their homes due to recent violence had previously found refuge there. UN agencies are concerned about the water supply and sanitation situation in the province, as well as the shortage of medicines and other essentials.
Protests in Europe
Mass protests in Albania, Belgium, France, Italy, and Portugal raise concerns from a human rights perspective, said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. He called on all parties involved to reduce tensions and prevent further escalation. Türk reminded that people have the right to protest peacefully. At the same time, the High Commissioner condemned the actions of those who use protests to commit acts of violence and vandalism. Türk also expressed concern regarding reports of unjustified and excessive use of force against protesters, including children.
The situation in the Central African Republic
In the Central African Republic, with the support of the UN mission in the country (MINUSCA), hostages who had been held by the armed group AAKG since December 2025 were freed. This was reported at the Security Council by MINUSCA head Valentina Rugwabiza. According to her, the country continues to consolidate achievements in the political sphere and in security. At the same time, the situation in the northeast and southeast of the CAR remains unstable, she warned. Rugwabiza emphasized the need to strengthen national institutions and ensure a gradual and responsible transitional process with the support of the UN mission.
