The UN strongly condemns the series of drone attacks in the Abyei region, including the strike on the Amiet market. According to the latest data, more than 150 civilians were killed and many others injured as a result of the attacks. This was stated by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a briefing for journalists in New York on Tuesday. He also reported the deaths of dozens of civilians following another drone strike on a market in West Kordofan state on Sunday.
“These attacks indicate a deeply troubling trend,” said Dujarric. “We are extremely concerned about the ongoing drone strikes across Sudan, as well as the damage they cause to critical infrastructure facilities. These attacks have a devastating impact on communities suffering from the consequences of more than three years of conflict.”
According to the UN, in Khartoum on Monday, a drone strike on a residential area killed three children aged two to six years, as well as their father. In South Darfur state, a drone attacked a residential house. In White Nile state on Tuesday, drones struck a local power station.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in turn, reported that last Saturday at least nine children—five boys and four girls aged five to ten—died as a result of an attack on a camp for displaced persons in the state of West Kordofan.
“We repeatedly emphasize: the civilian population and civilian infrastructure must be protected in accordance with international humanitarian law and must not become targets,” the UN spokesperson stressed. “All parties to the conflict are obliged to take measures to protect civilians and the infrastructure on which their lives depend.”
Conflict resolution efforts
Dujaric reported that the UN continues to work closely with all partners to advance peacekeeping efforts and support a coordinated approach to ending the conflict in Sudan.
The Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, has arrived in Geneva to participate in the sixth meeting of the Consultative Group on Sudanese Reconciliation, which he will co-chair. The meeting will begin on Wednesday in Geneva, with the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs State Secretary, Alexandre Fasel, serving as the second co-chair.
