Starting this academic year, a physics and mathematics track has been introduced in the seventh to ninth grades of capital city schools. More than 160 schools have joined the project, with over 6,600 students enrolled in these classes. More details about this in in his blog Sergey Sobyanin said.

“High-quality engineering education is a key condition for the country’s technological sovereignty. And knowledge of physics is the foundation for training future engineers. And it is laid, of course, in school,” noted the Mayor of Moscow.

In the last academic year, more than 20,000 ninth graders took the state final exam in physics — three thousand more than the previous year, and over 13,000 graduates chose the specialized Unified State Exam (USE) in this subject — also three thousand more than in 2025. The quality of knowledge is also improving. The average USE score in physics increased to 76.3, and the share of those scoring 80 and above reached 44 percent. At the All-Russian School Olympiad, the Moscow team won 88 diplomas in physics. Students traditionally bring gold and silver medals from international competitions as well.

The popularity of studying physics grows every year, and the city’s task is to help talented students master this complex but interesting subject. The most important thing in studying physics is the opportunity to experiment and see the result with your own eyes. Without this, formulas and problems quickly become too difficult, boring, and uninteresting for many students.

Therefore, work in the capital began with a comprehensive overhaul of schools physics departments. And starting from this academic year, a new project was launched — the physics-mathematics vertical. The entrance assessment included verification of mathematics knowledge (it was necessary to perform at a good or excellent level), as well as testing of functional literacy. Teachers who will be teaching in the physics-mathematics vertical classes also underwent independent diagnostics of knowledge and skills.

The training program is engaging and intensive — at least three hours of physics and eight hours of mathematics per week. The most important part of the program is a mandatory special course called “Physical Practicum,” within which students independently conduct experiments using modern laboratory equipment, gradually progressing from simple to complex. In seventh grade, they study mechanics; in eighth grade — thermal and electromagnetic phenomena; and in ninth grade — optics, sound, radioactivity, and ballistics. Both classical GIA laboratories and digital laboratories with automatic data processing are used.

“In general, over three years, the guys will go from ‘I know how to measure’ to ‘I know how to conduct research,’ draw conclusions, create models of physical instruments, and conduct experiments,” added Sergey Sobyanin.

In addition, outside of regular school hours, students will attend courses in natural science and technology fields, such as studying computer modeling of physical processes and mathematical statistics in physical experiments. There will also be classes in Olympiad-level physics to help the students learn how to solve non-standard problems.

“The physics and mathematics vertical has complemented the Moscow system of advanced training in secondary school. Alongside the mathematical, IT, and natural sciences verticals, the new project provides students with a good opportunity to acquire strong and sought-after knowledge. Early career guidance allows them to consciously choose their future specialty and successfully enroll in leading universities in the country after graduating from school,” concluded the Mayor of Moscow.

To find out how the capital has changed over the past years, what initiatives are currently being implemented to make city residents’ lives even more comfortable, and what awaits Moscow and its inhabitants in the near future, one can see in the extensive

special project on the mos.ru portal dedicated to the development of key areas of Moscow. Among them are transport, industry, healthcare, education, sports, and the construction sector. On the project’s page “Education” it tells about how educational institutions are transformed during reconstruction under the program “My School” and how the update affects the quality of education. The re-equipment of colleges allows students to acquire practical skills during their studies and obtain professions in demand on the labor market.
