September is widely recognized worldwide as Blood Cancer Awareness Month. There is a common belief that oncohematological diseases are incurable. However, with timely assistance, the chances of recovery are high. Among 104 verified non-profit organizations represented in charitable service On the mos.ru portal, there are funds that work for patients with blood system diseases. Their wards are both children and adults from various regions of Russia. Some of them need bone marrow transplants, others need rare medications or rehabilitation after treatment. Together with the “Podari Zhizn”, “Rusfond”, and Leukemia Fighting Foundation, you can support many people.
To help adults diagnosed with blood cancer
Leukemia Research Foundation helps adult patients with blood disorders across the country. His team organizes fundraising for treatment and medication, supports beneficiaries at various stages of the disease, and engages in extensive educational work: conducting lectures, round tables with doctors, and special projects for psychological assistance.
“Right now, hundreds of thousands of patients are fighting the disease, among them nine out of ten are adults. These are strong-willed, resilient individuals who inspire daily by their example and very rarely ask for help. But that doesn’t mean they don’t need it. Sometimes the only chance to return home from the hospital is a bone marrow transplant. However, finding a bone marrow donor is no easy task: about one person in ten thousand is a match, and among close relatives, a compatible donor is found only in 15–20 percent of cases,” the foundation notes.
That is why it is so important Federal Register of Bone Marrow Donors, which has been consolidating data on all potential donors in the country since 2022. Today, it already contains more than 545 thousand records. On September 24, World Leukemia Day, the foundation will hold its annual closed meeting of bone marrow donors and recipients, ‘Towards Life.’ The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about bone marrow donation in Russia and to raise funds to support those in urgent need of transplantation.
Last year, Svetlana, a ward of the Leukemia Fighting Foundation, came to the event. She turned to the foundation for help after facing acute myeloid leukemia. Svetlana learned about her diagnosis several years ago when she was planning a second child with her husband. Soon she was hospitalized, and to return home, she needed a bone marrow transplant. The donor was Anastasia, an obstetrician-gynecologist from the Moscow region, who had joined the registry while still a third-year medical student but did not believe her stem cells would be needed by anyone. The transplant helped: Svetlana returned to her normal life.
According to established rules, the donor and the recipient could not meet each other for two years after the transplantation. Last September, they finally had a chance to see each other: it was a significant and touching event for both women.
To join the registry, you only need to provide a single blood sample for typing. This means that practically anyone can become someone’s only chance for salvation.
In the charity service on mos.ru, presented foundation program: thanks to donations, the team pays for services related to bone marrow transplantation, purchases expensive drugs and consumables for research, covers the donor’s travel expenses and the transportation of donor stem cells to the clinic. The foundation gives a chance to those who are eagerly waiting for help.
Doing good deeds together with the “Give Life” Foundation
Fund “Gift of Life” since 2006 has been working with children with cancer and other serious diseases. As noted by the nonprofit organization, leukemia occurs on average in 14–15 out of 100,000 children, with a higher incidence among infants — 25 cases per 100,000, and up to 90 percent of tumors in them are congenital. That is why it is important to make the diagnosis within the first six months of life, and the main diagnosticians, as emphasized by the foundation, are the parents themselves.
Among the key signs that require attention are prolonged fever without an apparent cause that cannot be controlled, unexplained pallor, bruises and small hemorrhages on the body, refusal to eat, and a halt in weight gain. Changes in behavior should also raise concern: if the child becomes lethargic, indifferent, and behaves differently than usual, it is better not to delay a visit to the pediatrician. More about other early signs of childhood cancers can be found at website the “Gift of Life” Foundation.
The foundation’s program in the charitable service mos.ru includes treatment and rehabilitation of children with cancer and severe hematological diseases. One of the foundation’s wards, 11-year-old Adelina from Sochi, is fighting acute leukemia — a rare biphenotypic form in which malignant blood cells exhibit characteristics of two different developmental lines. Because of this, the disease progresses aggressively and responds worse to therapy. This year, the child required a targeted drug: it disables the mechanism that causes tumor cells to grow. Donations collected through the charitable service on mos.ru allowed the foundation to purchase the medication and deliver it to the clinic. Adelina is now continuing treatment and remains under medical supervision.
Help children with Rusfond
Since 1998, children in need of bone marrow transplantation have been helped by Rusfond. His program “Targeted Assistance for Seriously Ill Children” is presented on the charitable service. It supports minors with rare and severe pathologies, including oncological hematological diseases. Each application undergoes strict examination: the foundation verifies documents, communicates with the parents and the child’s attending physician, and only then pays for the surgery and treatment. Donor funds are also directed towards rehabilitation, the purchase of medicines, and medical equipment.
Currently, 17-year-old Sofya, a ward of the fund, needs help. The girl was healthy and active, but this spring her family’s life was turned upside down: Sofya was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. After chemotherapy, remission occurred, she managed to pass the Unified State Exams and enroll in the Faculty of Journalism. However, in August, tests again revealed malignant cells, and doctors confirmed the first very early relapse. Now Sofya requires a bone marrow transplant, and ahead of her is a course of immunotherapy with an expensive drug.
