Strawberries and raspberries can be found at Moscow fairs in the autumn as well. Farmers bring remontant varieties that are capable of producing several harvests and bearing fruit until the first frosts.
The berries reach the shelves from the Krasnodar Territory, Dagestan, the Moscow region, as well as the Lipetsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Ryazan, Tambov, and Rostov regions. Among the presented strawberry varieties are “Murano”, “Albion”, and “Queen Elizabeth II”, and among the raspberries — “Heracles”, “Heritage”, “Marabella”, “Atlant”, “Caramelka”, and “Polka.” Remontant varieties are valued for their dense berry structure, which allows them to retain their shape well after harvesting and withstand transportation better.
Regular strawberry varieties bear fruit for several weeks in early summer, while remontant varieties do so in August and September. For example, the sweet strawberry ‘Albion’, the tart ‘Murano’, and the large ‘Queen Elizabeth II’ bloom and produce harvests multiple times in one season. Even with the onset of autumn chill, the berries continue to ripen, and in favorable weather, harvesting can last until the first frosts.
Raspberry remontancy manifests differently. Regular varieties produce berries on last year’s branches, while remontant ones do so on the young shoots of the current season. Therefore, the main harvest ripens closer to late summer and autumn, and gradually: a single branch can simultaneously have flowers, unripe berries, and fruits ready for picking.
Raspberry varieties also differ in taste. “Caramelka” is characterized by a pronounced sweetness and aroma, while “Herakl” has a stronger tartness. “Polka” is valued for its sweet dessert taste and rich raspberry aroma. “Atlanta” has a sweet and sour taste, with a noticeable refreshing tartness. The late-ripening “Heritage” is characterized by moderate sweetness.
A participant of the Moscow fair on Volgogradsky Prospekt (property 73), Alexey Kharin from the city of Lebedyan in the Lipetsk region, draws attention to the importance of preserving the quality of berries during transportation.
“I grow remontant strawberries of the ‘Queen Elizabeth II’ variety and raspberries of the ‘Heritage’ variety — for me, it is important that the strawberries smell like strawberries, not like compote, remain firm, and withstand the journey to the stall well. And I consider this raspberry variety the standard for autumn harvest: the berries do not fall off and hold their shape. In summer, my bushes rest and gain strength, and then they produce berries that are not ashamed to bring to the fair,” shared Alexey Kharin.
Strawberries and raspberries complement the autumn diet with vitamins and dietary fiber. Strawberries contain vitamin C, which is essential for the proper functioning of the immune system, while raspberries are rich in fiber, supporting digestion and helping to maintain a feeling of fullness for longer.
