In Moscow, from September 24 to 27, 2026, dozens of interactive master classes will take place at the fifth exhibition “PROrestoration. Import substitution in restoration materials and technologies.” The sessions will discuss modern approaches to the restoration of cultural heritage sites. Some of them will be open to all interested participants.
“Traditionally, for the residents and guests of our city, a large-scale program of master classes has been prepared within the framework of the ‘PROrestoration’ exhibition, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the intricacies of cultural heritage preservation in real time. In total, there are more than 100 different events on three floors of the main building of Ivan Sytin’s historic printing house, which will be held throughout all four days. Professional masters and representatives of leading educational institutions will demonstrate unique techniques for working with various materials. And a special program will be prepared for the little visitors,” said the head of the Department of Cultural Heritage of the city of Moscow (Mosgornasledie).
Exhibition visitors will get acquainted with the techniques of artistic carving, restoration of icons and frescoes, applying gold and silver coatings to copper objects. Visitors will be able to participate in pulling architectural forms and moldings, master the technology of making glue from sturgeon fish, try their hand at watercolor painting, and also learn how to restore books at home without special equipment.
The contractors, material manufacturers, and educational institutions will traditionally share their experience in restoring architectural monuments in the capital and beyond. Specialists from the Tatarnikov restoration workshop will talk about soldering and casting methods used to recreate decorative architectural elements of the Grachevka estate in Khovrino. The company “Midas” will demonstrate how the original chandelier from the “Optics” pavilion at VDNH is being restored. Experts from LLC “Giprokon. Ko” will conduct a master class on stove hardware restoration, using stoves from the Uzkoye estate in Yasenevo as an example.
Representatives of Art Technics will introduce exhibition visitors to the technology of creating a reed pen, as well as traditional engravings and marbled paper. Employees of the Russian Scientific Library will demonstrate manual and mechanized making of laid restoration paper. Experts from the State Hermitage will teach how to reveal the paint layer in painting, and the International Restoration Center will conduct a session “Cyanotype — an ancient photographic process”. Students and teachers from College of Architecture, Design and Reengineering No. 26 will show how to build a Russian log house.
The exhibition will feature the “People’s Restoration” zone for the first time. Anyone interested can bring an interior item or decorative and applied art object and consult with experts about its restoration. In addition, some of these items will get a second life during master classes for the event’s guests.
A special program has been prepared for the youngest visitors to the exhibition. Children will be able to restore the colorful layer of a ceramic toy, paint plaster houses, master gilding of Christmas decorations, create their own restoration brick, and participate in other activities. In addition, at the Mosgornasledie stand, graduates of children’s restoration schools of 2026, together with other young visitors, will create a large-scale mosaic panel and fresco.
