Ancient fossils
Pavilion No. 28 “Beekeeping” and Pavilion No. 31 “Geology” are part of the “Biocluster” project created by the K.A. Timiryazev State Biological Museum. The museum building is located in the historic estate of Petr Shchukin on Malaya Gruzinskaya Street (building 15). Here is presented the amazing world of nature — from mushrooms and orchids to dinosaurs and humans. The Biological Museum’s collection contains over 110,000 exhibits. Among them are anthropological reconstructions, zoological specimens, ancient corals, trilobites, ammonites, and fish. One of the oldest evidence of life on Earth — stromatolites and oncolites — is over two billion years old. Stromatolites — layered sedimentary rocks — were discovered near Lake Sundozero in Karelia and in the Southern Urals. The spherical oncolite from the museum’s collection is about 2.3 billion years old. It was found in the Medvezhyegorsky District of the Republic of Karelia.
At the exhibition “12 Signs of the Living” In pavilion № 31 “Geology,” a fossilized ammonite shell aged over 180 million years is displayed, along with stromatolites from the Republic of Bashkortostan and Khabarovsk Krai, approximately 1.5 billion years old, and a fossilized coral preserved from the Carboniferous period. The find, about 300 million years old, was discovered near Moscow. At that time, this territory was covered by a sea inhabited by colonies of ancient corals.
