In September, the concert hall “Zaryadye”, subordinate to the capital To the Department of Culture, marks its eighth anniversary. During this time, it has become one of Moscow’s leading music venues, where academic and contemporary music, festivals, and theatrical projects come together.
“In eight concert seasons in the large hall of Zaryadye, more than three thousand events took place, attended by over 1.3 million viewers. In the ninth season, more than 500 events have been prepared for city residents — symphonic and chamber concerts, opera and ballet performances, choral, ethnic, and jazz programs, as well as plays and musical performances for children,” said the Minister of the Moscow Government, head of the Moscow Department of Culture.
Special attention in the program is given to authorial and anniversary cycles. In the Zaryadye hall, all symphonies of Gustav Mahler and Anton Bruckner were performed for the guests, and in the first half of 2026, a large-scale cycle was held to mark the 135th anniversary of Sergei Prokofiev’s birth.
The ninth season opened with a series dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich: it includes more than 20 concerts of symphonic and chamber music and will last for three months.
Premieres of contemporary composers are regularly held in the Zaryadye hall, which cements the venue’s status as one of the main stages for contemporary music. The transformable stage of the large hall allows the implementation of projects of any scale — from theatrical productions to unique events, such as the 24-hour marathon in honor of the organ’s inauguration.
The winter and summer music festivals, which have been held for four seasons, became key for the Zaryadye Hall. In recent years, the “Moscow Baroque” festival and the Contemporary Music Week have joined them.
The recently held IV Moscow Winter Music Festival brought together leading performers. Participants of the festival included Yuri Bashmet, Valery Gergiev, Hibla Gerzmava, Denis Matsuev, Evgeny Mironov, and other artists. The program included over 20 events.
The II Music Festival “Moscow Baroque” was dedicated to the 270th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s birth. In addition to his works, the program featured compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friedrich Handel and their contemporaries, as well as composers of the 20th century. Guests were treated to symphonic and chamber concerts, operas and oratorios, musical and stage productions, and children’s projects. For children, a musical fairy tale “Mozart Mouse” and interactive concerts were prepared. The IV Moscow Summer Music Festival “Zaryadye” included more than 40 programs: symphonic and chamber concerts, opera productions, jazz and ethnic programs. Over the course of a month, the festival’s events were attended by more than 30,000 spectators. More than 100 Russian and foreign artists and musical ensembles performed on the stages.

Unique acoustics and record-holding organ
The “Zaryadye” hall is a unique space that combines architecture, acoustics, and modern musical culture into a single concept. The large hall provides natural sound: thanks to acoustic solutions, the timbre and dynamics of instruments are revealed without additional amplification.
The acoustics were developed by Russian architects Alexander Ponomarev and Vladimir Plotkin in collaboration with the Japanese engineer Yasuhisa Toyota, the author of acoustic projects for the world’s largest concert venues. Among Toyota’s world-renowned projects are Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in New York, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the concert hall of the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg.
During the construction of the hall, a ceiling space technology was used: between the acoustic ceiling and the roof there are grids and mechanisms for moving sound portals. This allows for projects with large-scale decorations and complex hanging structures to be implemented.
In addition, a large concert organ — one of the largest in Europe — was specially built for Zaryadye. Its inauguration went down in history: the instrument sounded continuously for 24 hours, and the marathon was recorded in the Book of Records of Russia and Europe. The rich palette of timbres and broad artistic possibilities make this organ unique. It combines traditional mechanics and electronic technologies, enabling the performance of both polyphonic Baroque masterpieces and works by contemporary composers, including new sound experiments.
Ninth season
In in the ninth season The concert hall “Zaryadye” has prepared over 500 events. The program includes symphonic and chamber concerts, opera and ballet productions, choral, ethnic, and jazz performances, as well as shows for children. Artists from Russia and foreign countries participate in the projects. Valery Gergiev, Vladimir Spivakov, Denis Matsuev, Nikolai Lugansky, Ildar Abdrazakov, Vadim Repin, and other leading performers will take the stage.
For the 120th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich, Zaryadye is opening a cycle of more than 20 concerts. All symphonies, instrumental concertos, quartets, preludes and fugues for piano, and other significant compositions will be performed. The cycle will begin with a performance by the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev.
On September 25, the composer’s birthday, Yuri Favorin and the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Ivan Rudin will perform the First Piano Concerto with orchestra.
