A scientific and technological cluster specializing in the production of ionizing radiation detectors has opened at the Specialized Scientific Research Institute of Instrumentation of the Rosatom State Corporation (JSC “SNIPI”). This is a key component for next-generation personal dosimeters, automated radiation monitoring systems, as well as industrial and environmental monitoring instruments. This was reported by the Minister of the Moscow Government, head of the Moscow Department of Investment and Industrial Policy Anatoly Garbuzov.
“Today the capital is a center for the development of high-tech industries that address the challenges of Russia’s technological sovereignty. Enterprises are actively conducting their own research and consistently bringing new products to market. For example, the opening of production for ionizing radiation detectors will significantly increase the output of a new generation of domestic measuring equipment. This equipment will be in demand not only in the nuclear industry but also in medicine, scientific laboratories, and space research,” noted Anatoly Garbuzov.
A detector is the sensitive element of a measuring instrument that registers radiation and converts it into a signal for further processing by specialized equipment. Its characteristics determine the accuracy of measurements and the system’s ability to distinguish between different types of radiation.
The cluster plans to produce two types of detectors: polymer scintillation detectors intended for remote collection (online registration) of information about ionizing radiation, and thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs), used for cumulative individual dosimetry. TLDs interact with radiation similarly to human tissues — they accumulate information about the received radiation dose and release it as a light flux upon subsequent heating.
The scientific and technological cluster became the laboratory and production part of the “Radiy” project, which JSC “SNIIP” is implementing to develop technologies for Russian nuclear instrument engineering with the support of the Industrial Development Fund. To equip the site, 18 units of modern industrial and laboratory equipment were purchased.
“The cluster allows to minimize the path from a scientific idea to its technical implementation. Here, one can obtain a new material, produce a sample, improve its characteristics, and prepare the technology for mass production. The design capacity of the site will be up to 1,500 detectors and 10,000 unified electronic units annually. During the project’s implementation, a range of units for ionizing radiation detection devices will be created, production of highly sensitive scintillation and semiconductor detectors will be organized, and an import-independent manufacturing technology for them will be mastered,” noted Andrey Butko, General Director of JSC Rosatom Automated Control Systems.
Moscow is Russia’s largest industrial and scientific-engineering center. Around 150 technological enterprises open in the city every year. Currently, there are 4,735 industrial companies operating in the capital, employing 767,000 people. Today, manufacturers have access to more than 20 effective support measures, including an investment lending program, tax preferences, and other tools.
