Count’s estate, French park, and a building with shells
Kuskovo Estate — a true treasure of the capital. It is pleasant to walk here in any weather: the palaces, pavilions, marble sculptures, and winding paths are beautiful both in the rays of the summer sun and under the autumn rain. The architectural and park ensemble appeared in the 18th century under Count Pyotr Sheremetev and was the only French regular park in Moscow with marble sculptures and obelisks, a complex system of ponds, canals, and bridges. At that time, Kuskovo hosted up to 30,000 guests at once. People rowed boats here, listened to choral singing, held water parades and lavish receptions.
You can feel the atmosphere of the past by going to a tour of the Sheremetev Palace. The walls and ceilings in its halls are decorated with picturesque canvases, relief medallions, and murals. The exposition features about four thousand items — from books and manuscripts to portraits and personal belongings. One of these relics — gray goose feather — literally transports you to the past, bringing to life the era when immortal lines were created. The quill was the main tool of 19th-century writers. It did not last long: it quickly wore down and could turn into a short stick after just a few hours of work. The gray feather was found on Alexander Pushkin’s writing desk after his death.
A special mood will be brought by the exhibition “The Caucasian Captive. A Romantic Journey”. The exhibition includes a lifetime edition of Pushkin’s poem, images of the cities where the author worked on the text, the Caucasus views that inspired him, as well as illustrations for the work created by artists of the 19th-20th centuries.
Then you can go for a walk in the manor garden. It is located at the corner of Prechistenka and Chertolsky Lane. Here grow trees and shrubs traditionally planted in noble estates: balsamic poplars, lilac, and jasmine. In the garden, you can also find the blue flower of periwinkle — a symbol of the Pushkin era. It is now recognized as rare.
The museum also has another romantic space — a manor courtyard covered by a glass dome. Festive events and concerts are held there, and plays are performed. It is especially pleasant to be there on a clear day, when the atrium is flooded with sunlight through the glass.
Organ music, palm trees, and dancing water
Unforgettable impressions will also be left on visitors by Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve. The grand palace complex, conceived by Catherine II as a country residence, today offers activities for every taste — from leisurely strolls along shady alleys to themed exhibitions.
For romance lovers, the route along the park pavilions is suitable. Walking along Bolshoy Prospect from the Orekhovo metro station, you can see the Nerastankino pavilion. The sonorous name gave rise to a folk legend that those who confess their love on its steps will never part. Further along the way is a mysterious tower-ruin with an observation deck and an elegant gazebo called “Milovida” with sphinxes. From the embankment of the Upper Tsaritsyn Pond, you can make out the “Rusalkiny Gates” hidden in dense foliage.
Having completed the route along the shady park alleys, it’s worth taking a walk through the greenhouse complex. A tropical climate is maintained here all year round, allowing palms, figs, oranges, pineapples, and rare types of hibiscus—planted back in the time of Catherine II—to grow.
You can admire the nature of the museum-reserve from the water. There is a rental service for boats and pedal boats. In addition, stand-up paddleboards can be rented on the Borisovsky Ponds and the Lower Tsaritsyno Pond until the end of September.
Those who stay in the park until evening can make their walk even more romantic. So, in the middle of the Middle Tsaritsyn Pond, encircled by a horseshoe-shaped island, there is a large light and music fountain. To classical music, 800 jets rise up to 15 meters high, and more than three thousand underwater lamps create an unforgettable light show.
