In urban management complex Moscow residents were told about the major renovations of residential buildings where outstanding Soviet hockey players once lived.
House of the “Legend No. 17”
In 2024, work was carried out in house 118a on Mira Avenue, where Valeri Kharlamov lived, one of the leading hockey players of the USSR in the 1970s, a two-time Olympic champion and eight-time world champion. According to the number on his jersey, he was called “legend No. 17.”
A 10-story residential building was constructed in 1957 according to a custom design in the style of Soviet neoclassicism. The building has a complex shape, with facades decorated with ornamental elements. The end facade is flanked by two bay windows, and its lower floors are highlighted with rustication. The building’s volume is enhanced by interfloor belts and a crowning cornice. Both end facades are topped with pediments.
Specialists restored the house walls, basement, and main engineering system lines. The facades were cleaned and washed, the smooth rusticated plaster layer was repaired, and antiseptic solution was applied to damp areas. After that, the rustication of the lower floors was painted in a pale brown shade, while the other surfaces were painted in shades of “light ivory” and greenish-beige. Then new double-glazed windows were installed in common areas, and the plinth, balconies, and entrances were brought into order.
House of the four-time USSR champion
In 2024, a major renovation was carried out at house number 39 on Bolshaya Gruzinskaya Street. This was the home of Soviet hockey player and coach Viktor Tikhonov. He became the USSR champion four times. As the head coach, Viktor Tikhonov led the USSR national team and the Unified Team to the Olympic champion title three times and to the world champion title eight times. Specialists restored the facades, the roof, and the main engineering system networks.
The variable-height building (10–13 floors) was constructed in 1983 according to a custom design. The facade pattern is formed by an orderly arrangement of window openings, balconies, and loggias. The entrance vestibules protrude forward relative to the plane of the courtyard facade walls.
The facade was washed, and the brickwork damaged during years of operation was restored. Weathered joints were filled with a special compound, wet areas were treated with antiseptic solutions, and the brick walls were waterproofed. This advanced technology reliably protects the facade from the aggressive effects of atmospheric precipitation. The surfaces are covered with an ultra-thin, invisible-to-the-eye film that withstands temperature fluctuations.
In addition, the entrances and tiled plinth were put in order, the slopes were repaired and the drip edges were replaced. The roofing decking was replaced, the parapet and the doors leading to the roof were restored. Inside the building, the mains of central heating, cold and hot water supply were updated.
House of the Honored Master of Sports of the USSR
In 2026, major renovation is taking place in house 11 on Pravda Street. Viktor Kuzkin, an honored master of sports of the USSR, lived here. Specialists are repairing the facade, the basement, and replacing several engineering systems.
The nine-story residential building was constructed in 1953 according to a custom design in the style of Soviet neoclassicism. The lower part of the corner facade is highlighted by textured tiles. The window spaces on the first and fifth floors are decorated with casings. The corners of the building are adorned with rusticated stone. The four lower floors are separated from the upper part by an elongated profiled cornice. The building is topped with a cornice featuring modillions, balustrades, and attics.
Before starting the major renovation, specialists developed a project that took into account all the features of the building and the presence of decoration, and selected the necessary technologies and materials. They cleared and washed the exposed surfaces of the facade, and are now restoring the damaged sections of brickwork and ceramic blocks. After that, they will treat the damp areas with an antifungal agent and apply a water-repellent coating to the walls of the building. This will guarantee the structure many years of flawless service.
At the final stage, the decorative elements will be plastered and painted white: corner rustications, semicircular window trim, belts and cornice, as well as damaged balcony slabs and drip caps will be restored. In addition, the building’s plinth, entrance areas will be renovated, and the drainage system replaced. The basement will be tidied up, and the central heating, sewerage, cold and hot water supply systems will be repaired.
