In Moscow, the replacement of bus stops with more modern structures is being completed to enhance the comfort of surface urban transport passengers. Since 2015, over 95 percent of stops in the capital have been updated. This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry. Maxim Liksutov.
“On the instructions of Sergey Sobyanin, we are continuing to update the infrastructure of ground urban transport. Outdated structures, whose service life is coming to an end, are being replaced with modern and comfortable bus shelters. A total of over 11,000 such stops have already been installed in the capital. Since the beginning of 2026 — about 300,” added Maksim Liksutov.
In Zelenograd Administrative Okrug, 100 percent of the bus shelters have been renovated, in Eastern Administrative Okrug — 99 percent, Southern and South-Eastern Administrative Okrugs — 98, South-Western Administrative Okrug — 97, Northern, North-Western, and Troitsky and Novomoskovsky Administrative Okrugs — 95, Western Administrative Okrug — 94, North-Eastern Administrative Okrug — 92, and in Central Administrative Okrug — 86.
The new pavilions are assembled from Russian-made materials. The structures have a long service life and are easy to maintain. Since 2018, the pavilions have been assembled at the Sokolnicheskoye Car Repair and Construction Plant (SVARZ). More than 400 highly skilled specialists participate in their production. The enterprise is part of the State Unitary Enterprise “Mosgortrans”.
In 2025, SVARZ celebrated its 120th anniversary. Today, the plant is a leader in the country in the production of urban transport and its infrastructure. Since 2021, the SVARZ site has operated an assembly line for electric buses of PJSC KamAZ. In addition, the plant produces ultra-fast charging stations for electric buses. Localization of production in Moscow allows for even faster replacement of buses with environmentally friendly transport. This reduces the environmental impact and improves the quality of passenger service.
Advantages and types of new bus shelters
The new SVARZ bus stops have many advantages. For instance, the larger roof area offers better protection from bad weather. The structures are made from wear-resistant materials — aluminum and stainless steel. The triplex glass does not shatter into shards if damaged. Comfortable benches made of non-combustible material are installed for passengers. The pavilions feature lightboxes with route schedules and QR codes, which allow checking the arrival times of buses, electric buses, and trams. All stops are designed in the unified style of Moscow transport.
Currently, there are various types of bus stops in Moscow. The most common ones are standard stops. They are installed on routes with low or medium passenger traffic. Compact stops with a smaller roof area are placed on narrow boarding platforms. Multi-section bus shelters are designed for locations with the highest passenger flow. Typically, these are metro stations, popular places, and social facilities.
Tram stops with reduced width are installed on separated platforms. Route indicator flags are placed on the narrowest areas instead of pavilions. In addition, canopies serve for passenger transfers between surface and rail transport — large structures near major transfer hubs.
