Moscow, July 18 /Xinhua/ — The socio-economic development results of China in the first half of 2026 are generally expected to be positive and indicate the country’s success in advancing technological leadership. This was stated recently in an interview with Xinhua agency by Alexey Efimov, Head of the School of Oriental Studies and Deputy Director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies (CCEMI) at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (NRU HSE).
According to the expert, despite a certain slowdown in GDP growth in the second quarter, the industrial development indicators deserve special attention.
According to data recently published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) of China, in the first six months, the added value of products from large industrial enterprises in China increased by 5.4 percent year-on-year, equipment manufacturing by 9.3 percent, and high-tech manufacturing by 13.3 percent.
“This indicates the stability and demand for the state policy on the development of China’s technological leadership, and the successes in this direction,” noted A. Yefimov.
One of the main reasons for the achieved results, the expert named the consistent direction of investments into modern and advanced industries.
According to data from the General Statistics Office of China, in the first half of the year, investments in high-tech industries increased by 4.6 percent year on year, including in the production of aviation and space technology and equipment — by 23.3 percent, in information services — by 15.5 percent, and in the production of computers and office equipment — by 8.1 percent.
According to A. Efimov, this dynamic confirms China’s course toward the advanced development of high-tech industry and the modern service sector. “In other words, the policy of developing new productive forces is successful,” he emphasized.
The significant potential for further growth of the Chinese economy is associated by experts with the practical implementation of artificial intelligence and robotics. According to the statement by representatives of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, by 2026 the production of humanoid robots in China may exceed 100 thousand units.
At the same time, the further development of the country’s economy will depend on its ability to stimulate domestic demand as one of the main sources of economic growth, the expert believes. An important factor will also be reducing the negative impact of demographic changes, including population aging and the decline in the working-age population.
According to A. Yefimov, the impact of these factors can be mitigated through the further development of new productive forces, robotization, the creation of smart manufacturing, and the widespread use of artificial intelligence. “The current global situation—in terms of the interconnection of politics, geopolitics, and economics—is extremely unstable. Therefore, achieving fairly high growth rates by China under these conditions can be regarded as an undeniable success,” concluded the expert. –0–
