Shanghai, July 18 /Xinhua/ — China on Friday introduced a large open-source language model “Fenghe” designed for meteorological services, and also launched a global initiative to develop this open-source based model.
This statement was made by the China Meteorological Administration during the meteorological sub-forum held as part of the ongoing World Conference on Artificial Intelligence 2026 and the High-Level Conference on Global Artificial Intelligence Governance in Shanghai.
The “Fenghe” model, developed by the aforementioned administration, has been trained on 50 million tokens of meteorological service data and integrated with authoritative meteorological datasets to support weather forecasting, risk assessment, and the provision of meteorological services.
“Fenghe” provides users in the country with personalized weather information, service recommendations, and risk alerts. Its international version is also included in the UN initiative “Early Warnings for All,” offering weather consultations and risk analysis services in Chinese and English, the agency reported.
This global initiative to create the open-source meteorological AI model “Fenghe” aims to enable developers worldwide to integrate this model into a wide range of applications and foster the formation of an open AI ecosystem for meteorological services. -0-
