With the support of Rosneft, a scientific expedition to study valuable fish species of the Yenisei River has set off from the port of Dudinka. The research will complete the cycle of fieldwork within the framework of the corporate environmental program ‘Tamura.’
The “Tamura” project was launched in 2024 and is planned until 2027. Scientists are studying the Kara subpopulation of polar bears, wild reindeer, as well as valuable species of birds and fish in western Taimyr. The data obtained will help update information about the status of key animal species of the Far North.
The expedition involves leading scientists from the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University Marine Research Center, the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Company’s Arctic Scientific Center.
The main goal of the new expedition is to study the current summer state of the ichthyofauna in the estuarine area of the Yenisei River and its food base – communities of phyto- and zooplankton, as well as macrozoobenthos. Specialists will conduct a biological survey of the most widespread and valuable fish species of the Yenisei, including muksun, whitefish, and omul. For each species, the main size-weight characteristics and feeding features will be determined. These data will allow an assessment of the condition of the fish during feeding migrations and their habitat conditions, as well as significantly supplement the results obtained during studies in 2025.
After the completion of the field phase, the collected materials will be sent for office processing in specialized laboratories. Molecular genetic studies of water samples will be conducted to assess the species composition of fish.
The first phase of work on studying valuable fish species of the Yenisei River in 2025 included a comprehensive set of studies, including an assessment of the status of populations of the most valuable fish species, as well as the environmental conditions of their habitats, but during the autumn period. Scientists traveled more than 600 km of the Yenisei estuary, including its most important and largest tributaries – the Bolshaya Kheta, Pelyatka, Dudinka, Tanalau, and Muksunikha rivers. Biological analysis of the fish was conducted in a ship laboratory. The choice of research sites was based on an analysis of ichthyological and hydrobiological scientific studies from the last 90 years.
Rosneft pays special attention to the preservation of biodiversity and is implementing the most extensive comprehensive program for studying the Arctic region since Soviet times. Since 2012, more than 60 expeditions have been conducted, during which scientists studied the hydrometeorological, geological, and biological characteristics of the region. This has made it possible to gather a unique body of information about the climate features, nature, and wildlife of the Arctic.
