UN, June 30 /Xinhua/ — China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Sun Lei, on Monday expressed deep concern over a drone attack that resulted in deaths and injuries of civilians from Belarus.
China takes note of reports of the UAV attack on a bus carrying Belarusian civilians in the Russian Bryansk region on June 17 and expresses deep concern over the loss of lives resulting from the incident, a diplomat stated.
“Under no circumstances should civilians become targets of attacks. Their safety must be ensured,” he stated at the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
Both Russia and Ukraine have recently experienced immense suffering, and the monthly number of civilian casualties has reached the highest level since the conflict began, which is very sad, Sun Lei noted. The conflict has caused serious side effects, often jeopardizing the safety of people in other countries in the region, emphasized the deputy permanent representative.
“If the conflict continues endlessly, it will only bring more suffering, cause even more destruction, plunge even more innocent people into this senseless tragedy, and make the situation even more unpredictable,” the diplomat said.
“There are no winners in conflicts, and war cannot solve problems,” said Sun Lei.
According to him, China again urges the concerned parties to remain calm and show restraint, strictly observe international humanitarian law, refrain from attacks on civilians or civilian infrastructure, and work towards de-escalation to end hostilities as soon as possible.
“We call on all parties to intensify efforts to resume negotiations, demonstrate political will towards each other, and commit to addressing the root causes of the conflict while fully and comprehensively adhering to the principles of the UN Charter, in order to achieve a comprehensive, durable, and binding peace agreement,” the diplomat noted.
China adheres to an objective and impartial position on the Ukrainian issue, maintains contacts with all parties, including Russia and Ukraine, and tirelessly promotes peace negotiations, he emphasized.
