Urumqi, June 27 /Xinhua/ — On Thursday in the city of Urumqi, the administrative center of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) in northwest China, a new project for digital and scientific cooperation between China and the countries of Central Asia was launched – the “China-Central Asian Spatial-Temporal Intellectual Satellite Network.”
The presentation of this project took place within the framework of the 9th EXPO “China-Eurasia,” which is held from June 25 to 29 in Urumqi.
The satellite network, which will consist of 5 satellites during the initial project implementation period, is aimed at dynamic monitoring of glaciers, rivers, lakes, geological deformations, and the ecology of lands in the USA and Central Asian countries, regardless of weather conditions and time of day. The project will be implemented by the Laboratory of Integration of Airborne, Ground, and Space Systems in Xinjiang.
A set of technical solutions within the framework of the project was presented at the presentation. It includes a spatial-temporal large language database, a flood monitoring model as a result of snow melt, a cross-border agricultural monitoring model, and a multilingual large model.
According to the above-mentioned laboratory, intellectual computations and data monitoring processing will be carried out at the Xinjiang International Integrated Computing Center, and the larger models in the field of geological disasters, crop diseases, and pests, developed here using the obtained data, will be available both to Xinjiang and to the countries of Central Asia.
Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan Akobir Mirzora Imzoda noted at the presentation that this project has strategic significance for the countries of the region. It opens new opportunities for monitoring glaciers, rivers, water resources, and vulnerable territories, as well as for warning about natural disasters and strengthening ecological security.
Such initiatives can be seen as an important step on the path of scientific development, expanding international cooperation and strengthening friendship among nations, he added.
In recent years, China and the countries of Central Asia have been continuously advancing digital cooperation to jointly promote the construction of the digital Silk Road.
Besides digital technologies, another area of digital cooperation between the parties is the development of cross-border e-commerce and the digital economy.
In the report “Development of the ‘Dual Central Asia-China’: Achievements, Opportunities, and Prospects of Regional Cooperation,” published by the Xin Hua Institute, an analytical center under the Xin Hua Information Agency, in June 2025, it is stated that against the backdrop of digital modernization of the “China-Europe” route, expansion of overseas storage capacities and logistics networks, as well as within the framework of the joint initiative “Digital Silk Road of the 21st Century,” the mechanism of the “China-Central Asia” and Shanghai Cooperation Organization is actively developing joint activities of China and Central Asian countries in the field of cross-borderElectronic commerce and the digital economy.
Almost 300 companies from Central Asian countries have already entered Chinese e-commerce platforms, while Chinese enterprises are actively expanding to regional platforms, including Kaspi in Kazakhstan. A new form of business activity is emerging – the model of “e-commerce + cross-border livestream sales,” with the annual transaction volume already exceeding 1 billion yuan, as noted in the report.
At the event “Dialogue between government authorities and business on e-commerce of the Silk Road ‘China / Xinjiang – Central Asia'”, held on Friday within the framework of the 9th EXPO “China-Eurasia”, the director of the CAREC Institute, Charymammed Shalliev, noted that the growth of cross-border e-commerce is a transformative force for the region. It changes the landscape of global trade, removing barriers and opening unprecedented opportunities for economic growth and significant potential benefits.
