Beijing, June 24 /Xinhua/ — An official representative of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, Zhang Han, on Wednesday criticized the administration of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of Taiwan for threats to apply sanctions against local agricultural and fishery companies due to agreements signed with enterprises from the mainland part of China in the recent Taiwan Strait Forum, calling these actions of the DPP administration “arbitrary and arrogant.”
Zhan Han made these statements at a regular press briefing, responding to a question about the statement from one of the Taiwanese officials who appealed to the island’s agricultural department with a demand to conduct an investigation and apply punitive measures against five organizations from Hualian County and other districts.
The continental part of China has always been an important market for Taiwan’s agricultural products, said Zhang Han, noting that measures have also been taken to help Taiwanese farmers and fishermen expand their presence in the market of the mainland part of the country.
Zhang Han emphasized that local residents of Taiwan support the efforts of the mainland part of China to search for new markets, increase sales volumes, and ensure profits from the sale of Taiwanese agricultural and fishery products.
According to her, the attempt by the DPP administration to restrict such exchanges and impose sanctions on participants caused strong dissatisfaction in Taiwan’s agricultural and fisheries sectors and became the subject of widespread public criticism on the island.
