Tehran, June 18 /Xin Hua/ — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and his American counterpart Donald Trump electronically signed a memorandum of understanding between the two countries on ending the war. This was announced Thursday morning by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, Esmail Bagai.
E. Bagai said in an interview with the state channel IRIB that the signing was initially planned for Friday during an in-person ceremony in Switzerland. “But over the last 24 hours we have studied this issue and concluded that the best option is for the text to be signed electronically by the presidents of the two countries,” he added.
E. Bagai explained that electronic signatures of senior officials from both countries will increase the “cost of violations.”
He also noted that holding the ceremony was “not very appropriate.”
E. Bagai confirmed that the second phase of negotiations between Iran and the United States is to begin in Switzerland on Friday, adding that “we will have to see what results the parties achieve through intermediaries in the coming hours.”
The representative of the IRGC of Iran emphasized that for Iran, the cessation of fire in Lebanon was and remains as important as the truce in Iran.
After several weeks of negotiations, Iran, the USA, and Pakistan announced early Monday morning the completion of preparations for a memorandum of understanding on ending the war in the region on all fronts, including Lebanon.
