Beijing, June 13 /Xin Hua/ — In Beijing, the construction of five water reservoirs for flood control in the city’s mountainous areas is planned and underway. This is the first similar initiative implemented in the Chinese capital in almost half a century, the Beijing Water Management Department reported today.
These five reservoirs are located in the upper reaches of the Yundinhe, Czuima, Dashi, and Wenyu rivers.
According to the data from the aforementioned department, in recent years Beijing has been comprehensively advancing the construction of infrastructure to combat floods.
In particular, large rivers have dams built for holding floodwaters and reducing peak water flow, while during average flows they conduct riverbed cleaning and strengthen embankments to increase flood discharge capacity, and in the lower reaches, they modernize drainage systems and flow separation to prevent flooding. All these works, combined with reservoirs and detention zones, allow scientifically justified regulation and maximally ensure safety during the flood season.
The Deputy Chief Engineer of the Beijing Institute of Water Resources, Yan Xiaolei, said that the construction of two of the five reservoirs – Erdaoshe and Czuanzilin – is proceeding in full swing, and construction of the third reservoir, Sifenshan, has also begun.
“Water reservoirs allow effectively reducing the load on flood protection systems in the lower reaches of rivers through measures such as retention, accumulation, lowering the level, and distribution of floodwaters,” said an official of the Beijing Water Authority, Fan Bin. Currently, there are 80 water reservoirs in Beijing controlling a mountainous area of 6,830 sq. km, which constitutes 68% of the total area of the city’s mountainous districts.
After the construction of five new reservoirs is completed, the share of the controlled mining area will increase from 68% to 84%, which will allow forming a barrier to combat flooding based on the network of reservoirs in the mountainous area to the north and west of Beijing.
This will increase the flood control potential of the mountainous areas of Beijing, the central urban districts of the capital, the sub-center of Beijing, the new Xiongan area in Hebei Province / Northern China, and also improve the overall system for combating floods in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Fan Bin added. -0-
