Abuja, June 9 /Xinhua/ — At least four people died and another 24 were injured as a result of a passenger train derailment in Delta State, southern Nigeria. This was reported on Tuesday by the permanent secretary of the country’s Ministry of Transport, Funsho Adebiyi.
At a press briefing in Abuja, F. Adebiyi stated that at the time of the accident, which occurred on June 8 near the city of Agbor, on a train traveling the Warri — Itakpe route, a total of 482 people were on board, including 442 passengers and 40 members of the locomotive and train crew.
According to preliminary data, as a result of the incident, four railcars overturned, and one more derailed.
F. Adebiy added that rescue operations began immediately after the accident and have now been completed, and the authorities have begun a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the incident.
