Valletta, May 31 /Xinhua/ — Early parliamentary elections were held in Malta on Saturday, and many expected that the ruling Labour Party would be re-elected for a fourth consecutive term.
More than 340 thousand registered voters have the right to elect members of parliament for the next five years. It is expected that the election results will become known on Sunday.
According to public opinion polls, the ruling Labour Party, headed by Prime Minister Roberto Abela, has a high chance of making history by winning a fourth consecutive mandate.
D. Abela promised to advance reforms and continue to lead the country through difficulties, citing that his government managed the pandemic and is capable of responding to the current global uncertainties.
Meanwhile, the 30-year-old opposition leader Alex Borg, who has headed the Nationalist Party for only a few months, promises in his election campaign to renew and change the country’s course.
Maltese intelligence services reported that R. Abela has called for early elections amid concerns about the global problems in the field of energy and security.
Malta is divided into 13 electoral districts, each of which elects five or six members of parliament depending on the number of voters.
