Kunming, May 31 /Xinhua/ — Five people died and one was injured as a result of a collapse that occurred during illegal mining of minerals in Huize County, Yunnan Province (Southwest China) early Sunday morning.

According to local authorities, the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 AM in the village of Bayu in the Nagu district of Huize.

Emergency response agencies, public safety, fire service, and the health and natural resources departments of Cuijzin city and Hueitse county have launched a rescue operation. All six people trapped in the trap were extracted and urgently transported to the hospital for medical assistance.

Five of the rescued died from their injuries despite the efforts of the medical staff. One survivor is now in stable condition, and the threat to his life has passed.

An investigation into the causes of the incident is underway. -0-
