Washington, May 30 /Xinhua/ — A number of American experts issued a warning about growing uncertainty surrounding efforts to end the Iranian conflict after U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday postponed making a final decision on the draft agreement with Tehran.
Earlier, Washington and Tehran reached a preliminary agreement on signing a memorandum of understanding to extend the ceasefire for 60 days and to start nuclear negotiations. The parties expected final approval from D. Trump.
What happens next remains unclear, but if a ceasefire is not achieved, this may be due to other parties besides Tehran and Washington.
“If a 60-day cessation of fire does not become a reality, this will primarily be related to the choice of the government / Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu / to maintain the Israel-Lebanon war front, as well as the inability of the USA to rein in Netanyahu,” said Shin Yu, an associate of the Center for International Studies and Security Research at the University of Maryland Clay Ramsey.
After the attacks by the USA and Israel on Iran, the Lebanese movement “Hezbollah” joined the conflict in March, launching rockets and drones over northern Israel. In response, Israel began a large-scale air and ground operation on Lebanese territory.
Even if the cessation of fire is agreed upon, there is no guarantee that it will be observed.
“For the ceasefire to happen, the USA and Israel will have to admit that Iran will not make the first concession without seeing the USA and Israel make concessions simultaneously,” said K. Ramzi.
Some experts say that the White House does not pay enough attention to the art of diplomacy, which is necessary for concluding such a deal.
“In many respects, this boils down to the fact that D. Trump does not value the behind-the-scenes work required for international relations,” said political science professor Christopher Galdieri of Saint Anselm College. There is a risk that the D. Trump administration will constantly announce an impending deal, ceasefire, or victory, but in reality, nothing will happen, the scholar added.
The longer the war goes on, the greater the damage it can cause to the prospects of the Republican Party in the midterm elections in November. “Every day, D. Trump makes a new statement about ending the war in Iran, but the conflict is still not over,” said Xin Hua, senior research fellow at the Brookings Institution, Darrell West. “People see high gas prices and the absence of a clear strategy to end the war. This is becoming a major political problem for Trump,” he noted.
