UN, May 26 /Xinhua/ — Member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi on Tuesday set out China’s position regarding the requirements for the candidate for the post of UN Secretary-General.

The next Secretary-General will influence the future reform of the UN and the practical interests of the member states of the organization, Van I said to journalists after chairing the meeting of the UN Security Council on the topic “Defending the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the international system, in which the UN occupies a central position.”

“China believes that the next General Secretary should at least meet the following requirements. First, firmly adhere to the goals and principles of the UN Charter. Second, possess rich diplomatic and political experience, as well as strong coordination abilities. Third, be able to uphold justice on the most important issues, in particular, pay attention to the interests and aspirations of developing countries. Fourth, should be capable of maintaining UN reform in the right direction to improve the efficiency of the organization — note: Xin Hua/”, said the head of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to him, the next Secretary-General must have commitment to the UN Charter, outstanding competence, honesty and impartiality, as well as willingness to take responsibility and achieve results. Van I noted that China, together with other countries, will approach the process of selecting the new UN chief responsibly.

Van I also expressed gratitude to the outgoing UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who held this position for almost 10 years.

Throughout this time, he devoted himself to the cause of multilateralism and made efforts to strengthen the authority of the UN, promote peace and protect justice, noted the Chinese minister.
