UN, May 27 /Xinhua/ — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday warned of a “dangerous weakening” of respect for international law.
“The key principles — sovereign equality, territorial integrity, political independence, prohibition of threat or use of force — are disputed or ignored. Violations go unpunished. Impunity spreads,” stated A. Guterres at a high-level open debate in the Security Council on the observance of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the international system, in which the UN holds a central place.
The UN Charter remains humanity’s main hope for peace, but its strength depends on the commitment of those who bear responsibility for its observance, said A. Guterres, warning that geopolitical disagreements are deepening, distrust is growing, and reaching consensus is becoming increasingly difficult.
“And too often the Security Council — for example, Syria — fails to act cohesively and purposefully. When the Security Council is divided, the consequences are felt far beyond this hall,” the Secretary-General said.
In addition, he expressed concern about the spread and intensification of conflicts, as well as the “accelerating and destabilizing arms race.”
To address this problem, A. Guterres called for actions in three areas: conflict prevention and peacekeeping, respect for international law, and UN Security Council reform.
