Automobile tourism in Russia has been steadily gaining momentum in recent years, which is especially noticeable on weekends and holidays, when many citizens go on trips around the country. The demand for roads has increased significantly, including during the recent May holidays. Highways such as the M-12 “Vostok”, M-11 “Neva”, and M-4 “Don” have been particularly popular, reported Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.
“High-speed highways are an important and integral part of the country’s road infrastructure. They provide high throughput capacity, safety, and comfort for motorists. Thanks to this, long distances can be covered in a short and predictable time. Moreover, on long trips, there is the possibility to stop in a modern multifunctional road service area, where all necessary services are available. Today, it is possible to drive from Saint Petersburg to Simferopol without a single traffic light, as well as to Yekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk. The greatest traffic intensity is usually observed on the eve of holidays, when people go on trips and to country houses, as well as at the end of weekends. In particular, on various routes along the M-12 “Vostok” highway from Moscow to Kazan, from April 30 to May 11, drivers averaged about 95 thousand trips per day. The record number of trips—123 thousand—was recorded on May 11. If we talk about a specific section, the maximum traffic intensity was recorded on May 8 on the stretch near Balashikha and in the Moscow region, when motorists made over 63 thousand passages along this section.Traditionally, roads are in demand during the May holidays, including in the southern direction – the M-4 “Don” and the A-289,” said Marat Khusnullin.
About 9 thousand vehicle passages per day were recorded on average on the high-speed section of the M-12 “Vostok” near Kazan. Maximum figures were noted closer to Kazan and Yekaterinburg: on average, about 13 thousand passages per day were made on these sections.
On the M-4 “Don” highway, the peak traffic intensity was recorded in a section in the Moscow region – more than 56 thousand trips per day. The maximum was recorded on May 11, when drivers made over 71 thousand trips on the section of the M-4 “Don” near Moscow. High figures were also observed in the Rostov region, where on April 30 there were 48.7 thousand trips recorded.
On the federal highway A-289 Krasnodar – Kerch during the May holidays, motorists made an average of about 17 thousand trips on various routes per day. The peak value was recorded on April 30 – about 21 thousand trips.
The Chairman of the Board of the state company “Avtodor”, Vyacheslav Petushenko, noted that the traffic growth on holidays is not an exception for the high-speed highway between Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
On the M-11 “Neva” highway from April 30 to May 11, motorists made approximately 57 thousand trips per day on various routes, 11% of which were transit trips along the entire road from Moscow to Saint Petersburg. The maximum was reached on May 11, when this indicator rose to 81 thousand trips per day. If we talk about peak values in specific sections, high figures were recorded on May 11 near Solnechnogorsk and Klin in the Moscow region — about 40 thousand trips per day, as well as near Saint Petersburg — about 38 thousand trips.Regarding the Moscow region, the peak load on the Central Ring Road came on April 30: more than 153 thousand trips along various routes. The most high-intensity section was the CRR from the M-4 to the Kaluga highway – over 39 thousand passages. Also popular among drivers was the section near the intersection with Dmitrovskoye highway, where at the end of last year we launched traffic on a new interchange. The traffic intensity there on April 30 and May 8 exceeded 23 thousand passages,” noted Vyacheslav Petushenko.
