Ebola Outbreak
The scale of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is growing faster than expected, said on Friday the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The risk of virus spread within the DRC is now assessed as “very high,” at the regional level as “high,” but globally it remains “low.” As of today, 82 cases of the disease and seven deaths have been confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo. At the same time, the number of suspected cases approaches 750, and suspected deaths – 177. In neighboring Uganda, the situation remains stable.
New case of infection with the virus
VOZ reported on Friday about a newly confirmed case of infection with the antavirus among the crew members of the cruise liner MV Hondius. The previously ill person disembarked in Tenerife and was repatriated to the Netherlands, where he remained in isolation. A total of 12 cases of antavirus infection and three deaths have been registered. Reports of the latest fatal case were received on May 2. More than 600 people are currently under observation in 30 countries.
Attack on a college in the Luhansk region
The UN is monitoring with concern reports of an attack on a college’s educational building and dormitory in the city of Starobilsk, Luhansk region of Ukraine, which resulted in deaths and injuries among civilians, including children. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated at a briefing in New York: “We strongly condemn any attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, wherever they occur. As repeatedly emphasized by the Secretary-General, such attacks are prohibited under international humanitarian law and must cease immediately.”
Forum of Cities in Baku
A historic meeting of more than 57 thousand delegates – the largest ever held World Forum of Cities – concluded on Friday in Baku with an appeal to the international community urging a review of approaches to ensuring housing for people.
