Saint Petersburg, May 18 /Xin Hua/ — Pragmatic and stable relations between Russia and China are one of the important elements stabilizing the international situation in today’s turbulent times. This was stated on Tuesday in an interview with Xin Hua by expert Vladimir Nezhdanov of the Institute of Contemporary International Problems of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation on the eve of the state visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to China.

According to the expert, the foundations of cooperation between the two countries were laid back in the 1990s, in particular when Russian-Chinese partnership relations and strategic interaction were established 30 years ago. “The relations between our countries are pragmatic; they are based on mutual interest and mutual benefit. Today, we see a complementary nature of the Russian and Chinese economies. We see an overlap of interests and Russia’s readiness to support Chinese initiatives. This pragmatic cooperation will continue in the future,” the interlocutor of Xinhua noted.

In the opinion of V. Nezhdanov, strong political relations have been established between Russia and China at all levels, and qualitative relations have already been built between the largest businesses of the two countries. “Today, with the mutual visa-free regime, the holding of forums and cultural exchange events, we see a growth of public interest, which results in the involvement in this process of small and medium businesses, and groups of activists. I believe that in some time we will observe a high intensity of public dialogue and a high level of mutual understanding between the parties on the public level,” the expert is confident.

He noted the rigidity of the positions of the two states regarding the role of the UN, the necessity of defending generally recognized norms and principles of international law, as well as the necessity of seeking consensus in relations through diplomatic means. As emphasized by V. Nezhdanov, this acts as a stabilizing factor in international relations both in Eurasia and worldwide.

On May 19-20, Russian President V. Putin will visit China on a state visit. V. Nezhdanov believes that new agreements on mutual trade, investment cooperation, and cooperation in the fuel and energy sector may be signed during this visit. “It can be expected that neither side will come away empty-handed from this meeting. It has become a tradition that meetings between Russian and Chinese leaders conclude with deals involving quite large sums and with quite significant prospects for further cooperation,” the expert added.
