The UN Secretary-General welcomes the decision of the United States to allocate additional financing in the amount of 1.8 billion dollars for the humanitarian work of the UN and its partners worldwide.

According to the statement by the UN Secretary-General’s press secretary, this obligation will allow humanitarian organizations to provide vital support to millions of people affected by the acute crisis situation.

UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher supported the Secretary-General’s statement, emphasizing that the new US contribution comes at a time when global needs are rapidly increasing, while funding is decreasing.

“This support will help save millions of lives,” he said.

According to Fletcher, the US contribution of two billion dollars, announced in December of last year, “stabilized a system under extreme pressure.” The UN acted promptly: 1.68 billion dollars were directed towards “aid based on real needs” for 22 million people in 18 crisis situations.

Fletcher emphasized that humanitarian workers are facing unprecedented problems: “This is an exceptionally difficult time for the humanitarian community.”

He reminded that humanitarian workers are increasingly subjected to attacks. “But we have proven that we are capable of delivering aid even in the most difficult conditions,” Fletcher added.
