Sofia, May 8 /Sina/ — Former Bulgarian President Rumen Radev was elected the new Prime Minister of the country on Friday after the parliament approved his candidacy and the cabinet composition he presented.

D. Radev, the leader of the Progressive Bulgaria party, took this post, having secured the support of 124 deputies from his party in the 240-seat parliament. Deputies from the second-largest parliamentary force — the coalition Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria–Union of Democratic Forces (GERB-SDS) — abstained during the vote, while opposition parties spoke out against the new government. The parliament also approved the structure and composition of the Council of Ministers.

According to the Constitution of Bulgaria, the government must receive the support of more than half of the deputies present at the meeting.

R. Radev was born in 1963 and was first elected president in 2016, after which he was re-elected in 2021. In January 2026, he resigned in order to participate in the early parliamentary elections held on April 19. Before beginning his political career, R. Radev served as a professional fighter pilot and commander of the Bulgarian Air Force.

Presenting his cabinet to parliament, Mr. Radev acknowledged the challenges facing the country, including rapid price growth, a high level of inflation, economic difficulties, and regional conflicts. He stated that his government will focus on modernization, economic development, ensuring public security, and preventing Bulgaria from being drawn into military conflicts.

D. Radev also promised to make efforts to reduce poverty, improve the business environment, attract investments, expand the use of high technologies and artificial intelligence, and intensify the fight against crime. –0–
