Tbilisi, May 8 /Xinhua/ — Georgia is celebrating National Wine Day for the first time. The holiday was established on the initiative of the National Wine Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and by a government decision with the aim of popularizing Georgian wine as the most important part of national identity and cultural heritage. This was reported on Friday by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.

Within the framework of the National Wine Day in Tbilisi, a conference was held with the participation of representatives of the Georgian winemaking industry, scientific circles, and foreign experts from the winemaking sector.

“Wine is an integral part of our traditions and hospitality. The grapevine from the very beginning became a national value defining our identity throughout millennia. More than 525 endemic grape varieties are a wealth thanks to which Georgia occupies one of the leading places in the world,” said Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, speaking at the conference.

As part of the celebration, wine tastings were organized, as well as educational and entertainment programs dedicated to the 8000-year history of Georgian winemaking.

National Day of Guilt ended with a musical and theatrical performance at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre. –0–
