UN, May 2 /Xin Hua/ — The UN Security Council in May will focus on restoring the authority of the UN Charter and the role of the organization, advancing political settlement in the Middle East, as well as promoting stability and development of African countries. This was stated on Friday at a press briefing by China’s permanent representative to the UN, the May chair of the Security Council, Fu Zun.
The primary task is to restore the authority of the UN Charter and the role of the United Nations, he said.
According to the diplomat, in recent years the international situation has become increasingly unstable: the number of conflicts is growing, disagreements are deepening, and the multilateral system and international law are under considerable pressure. Fu Cun called on the international community to take urgent measures to maintain the authority of the UN Charter and strengthen the role of the United Nations to prevent the “slide of the world into the law of the jungle” and to “save future generations from the disasters of war.”
In this context, he noted that the UN in May will hold high-level open debates on the issues of respecting the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the international system, the core of which is the UN.
The second priority of the Security Council is to advance political settlement in the Middle East, the permanent representative said.
“We must call on the relevant parties to calmness and restraint, to put an end to combat actions, to resolve disagreements by diplomatic means, and to move in the direction of de-escalation,” he emphasized.
Speaking about the Palestinian issue, Fu Tsun noted that the situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank “still causes serious concern,” and the basis for regulation based on the “two-state solution for two peoples” plan is being blurred. The UN Security Council strongly urges the relevant parties, especially Israel, to fully comply with the agreement to cease fire in Gaza, ensure humanitarian access, and stop settler activities, the diplomat stated.
He also called on the Security Council to clearly support the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of Lebanon, to facilitate the cessation of hostilities, as well as to support the country’s government in stabilizing the internal situation and providing the population with basic means for survival.
The third priority of the UN, according to the diplomat, is the stability and development of African countries.
Acute problems of this region traditionally occupy an important place on the Security Council’s agenda, which will continue to pay increased attention to Africa and support efforts to solve African problems by African means, Fu Cun noted.
“We encourage dialogue and consultations between the relevant parties to reduce tensions and resolve disagreements,” he said. The Permanent Representative called on the international community to strengthen humanitarian support and development assistance to help interested countries strengthen their independent development potential and eliminate the root causes of conflicts.
