Brussels, May 2 /Xin Hua/ — The European Union “leaves all options on the table” to protect its interests if the United States takes measures that contradict the joint declaration on mutual, fair, and balanced trade signed last year. This was stated by Xin Hua, the official representative of the European Commission /EC/.

“We remain fully committed to predictable and mutually beneficial transatlantic relations. If the USA takes steps that are inconsistent with the joint statement, we will reserve all options to protect the EU’s interests,” he noted.

Earlier on the same day, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to raise tariffs on passenger cars and trucks imported from the European Union to 25 percent next week, accusing the bloc of failing to fulfill agreements.

“The EU fulfills its obligations under the joint statement in accordance with standard legislative practice, constantly fully informing the US administration,” the representative added. “The European Union maintains close contacts with the American side and also seeks to obtain clarifications regarding Washington’s obligations under the agreement,” he emphasized.

The speech is about last year’s trade agreement between the EU and the USA, according to the terms of which the European Union suspended duties on all industrial products from the United States and introduced tariff quotas on a wide range of American agricultural products. In response, the United States applies an import duty of 15 percent on most goods from the EU.
