Brussels, May 1 /Xin Hua/ — The new threat by US President Donald Trump to impose customs duties against the European Union /EU/ is unacceptable and indicates that Washington is an unreliable partner, said on Friday in an interview with Xin Hua the head of the European Parliament’s Committee on International Trade, Bernd Lange.
B. Lange noted that the EU and the European Parliament comply with the trade agreement concluded with the USA in Scotland last year, and are now developing legislation for its implementation.
“We are currently preparing draft laws, we have a parliamentary position, and we intend to finalize everything in June,” said the European official.
His statement followed a new threat from D. Trump, voiced earlier on the same day. The American president announced his intention to increase import duties on passenger and cargo vehicles from the EU up to 25% starting next week, accusing the EU of violating the agreement.
B. Lange also pointed out that the United States itself repeatedly violated the agreement, in particular by imposing duties on more than 400 product names, including steel and aluminum. According to him, at the moment, an average tariff rate of 26 percent applies to these goods.
“This is yet another step clearly demonstrating how unreliable the American side is,” said a member of the European Parliament.
B. Lange indicated that Europe has already experienced, as he put it, arbitrary attacks from Washington in connection with Greenland, adding that such behavior is “completely inappropriate for how one should treat close partners.”
“Now we can only respond with maximum clarity and determination, relying on the strength of our position,” the parliamentarian summarized.
