Main news of the day at the UN and worldwide: delivery of aid to population centers in eastern and southern Ukraine, worsening humanitarian situation in Cuba, disruptions in humanitarian supplies amid the Middle East crisis, World Press Freedom Day.
Aid to Ukraine
Since Monday, six United Nations humanitarian convoys and partner organizations have delivered aid to frontline settlements in eastern and southern Ukraine, including in Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions. Four thousand people received food products, generators, hygiene items, clothing, and first aid kits. Meanwhile, over the past day, as a result of attacks and combat operations across Ukraine, at least two civilians were killed and 58 more were wounded. Residential houses, schools, railway infrastructure, and shops were damaged.
Humanitarian situation in Cuba
The humanitarian situation in Cuba continues to worsen as the energy crisis intensifies. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports serious problems in the healthcare sector. More than 96,000 patients, including 11,000 children, are awaiting surgeries that cannot be performed due to insufficient electricity supply. Many medical procedures have been postponed. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) provides assistance to the population, but its delivery is hampered by the difficult conditions.
Crisis in the Middle East
Humanitarian organizations worldwide are facing difficulties against the backdrop of the crisis in the Middle East, which disrupts global supply chains and hinders the delivery of aid. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the consequences of the crisis have already gone far beyond the region. This is especially acute in countries of Asia and Africa, where humanitarian structures face a sharp increase in needs and logistical disruptions.
World Press Freedom Day
Eighty-five percent of crimes against journalists remain unsolved and unpunished. This was recalled by the UN Secretary-General on the eve of World Press Freedom Day, which is celebrated on May 3. In recent years, more and more journalists have been dying in combat zones, he noted. The head of the UN also added that any freedom depends on the freedom of the press, and called for the protection of journalists and their rights.
