Tbilisi, April 20 /Sinya/ — The State Security Service of Georgia detained one foreign citizen and one Georgian citizen in the city of Batumi on charges of joining the ranks of the terrorist organization “Islamic State.” This was announced on Monday at a briefing by the first deputy head of the SSS, Lasha Magradze.

According to L. Magradze, during the investigation it was established that the mentioned individuals joined the ranks of the terrorist organization “Islamic State”, took an oath of allegiance (/so-called bayat/), recorded this on video, and sent it to the leaders of the organization, thereby expressing unconditional submission to them.

It was also established that the detainees had planned to leave Georgia for another country, where they were supposed to join the militants of the “Islamic State.”

According to the FSB information, the investigation is being conducted under Article 328 of the Criminal Code, which provides for participation in a terrorist organization of a foreign state and assistance to terrorist activities. The punishment under this article ranges from 10 to 17 years of imprisonment.
