Minsk, April 19 /Xin Hua/ — A republican community work day took place in Belarus on Saturday. The event has already become a good annual tradition. During the community work day, residents of the country, as part of labor collectives and independently, tidied up monuments and memorial complexes from the times of the Great Patriotic War, social facilities, and beautified the adjacent territories, parks, and squares.
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko worked at the site of the National Historical Museum and the People’s Unity Park in Minsk during the republican community work day. According to the press service of the Belarusian leader, A. Lukashenko, together with other participants of the community work day, planted trees on the territory adjacent to the museum.
Funds earned from holding the community work day (subbotnik) will be directed specifically towards the creation of a permanent exhibition for the under-construction National Historical Museum of Belarus.
Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Natalya Petkevich reported that during the event, according to preliminary data, more than 18 million Belarusian rubles / more than 6.3 million US dollars / were collected. According to her, about 2.3 million people joined the Saturday volunteer cleanup in Belarus. “This is a very good figure.
