Hanzhou, April 16 /Xinhua/ — The first fully electric intelligent container ship in China with a displacement of 10,000 tons, which is also the largest of its kind in the world, was put into commercial operation on Wednesday, marking a new stage of “green” and intelligent development in China’s container shipping sector.

The container ship “Nin Yuan Dan Kun” departed on Wednesday afternoon from the port of Ningbo-Zhoushan / Zhejiang Province, East China / to the port of Xiamen / Zhejiang Province /. Ships carrying out cargo transportation along this route, traditionally operating on fossil fuels, are currently rapidly transitioning to electric power installations.

Independently developed and designed by the Shanghai Commercial Ship Design and Research Institute and fully equipped with an electric propulsion system, the electric container ship can achieve zero carbon dioxide emissions, with intelligent management and high efficiency.

A container ship 127.8 meters long and 21.6 meters wide can be loaded with 742 containers in twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).

It is equipped with a set of 10 container-type batteries with a total capacity of about 20,000 kWh and two synchronous motors with permanent magnets with a power of 875 kW. This will allow reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1,462 tons per year, achieving zero emission levels, noise, and environmental pollution throughout the entire operation process.

Regarding intellectualization, the vessel is equipped with intellectual navigation and propulsion systems that allow autonomous collision avoidance, high-precision tracking, and integrated “ship-shore-cloud” management. A two-mode charging system allows recharging the vessel from a high-voltage coastal grid or replacing batteries for rapid replenishment of power reserves.

In addition, the design of the container carrier with an open deck increases the efficiency of loading and unloading operations.

The Chinese character “Kun” originates from the idea of the ancient Chinese thinker Zhuangzi, who used this character to denote a gigantic fish. A similar type of vessel, “Ning Yuan Dian Peng” / “Peng” in this context means a gigantic bird / is supposed to undergo sea trials in May this year and will be delivered to the customer in June.

“This project demonstrates our commitment to the ‘green’ transformation of the shipping industry and our contribution to supporting the country’s efforts to achieve peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality,” said Chen Xiaofen, Chairman of Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd., an operator of two container ships. -0-
