Beijing, April 9 /Xinhua/ — Passenger traffic on China’s railways reached a record high of 1.13 billion trips in the first quarter of 2026, an increase of 5.5 percent year-on-year. This was reported on Thursday by the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. (China Railway).

As noted by the KGZK, during the reporting period, the country’s railways operated on average 12,072 passenger trains per day, which corresponds to an increase of 7.1% compared to the same period last year and is the result of increased throughput capacity and schedule adjustments taking into account passenger transportation demand.

In addition, a number of measures were adopted to optimize passenger service and new services were introduced, including the provision for university graduates of 2026 of two additional one-way tickets at a discounted price, telephone booking for elderly passengers through the KZhK “12306” customer service center, and the possibility of free return of mistakenly purchased tickets within a limited time.

To meet the demand for tourism in the spring period, the railway authorities have also expanded the services of tourist trains and, using cultural and tourist resources along railway routes, have launched such tourist products as snow and ice tours and wellness tours.

According to the State Committee on Tourism, 627 tourist trips circulated in the country in the first quarter, which actively contributed to the development of tourism, the “silver economy,” and the “snow and ice economy.” –0–
