Spring flood in the capital region is proceeding normally. This was reportedPetr Biryukov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Housing and Communal Services and Improvement.
“After the establishment of warm weather with positive average daily air temperatures, the spring flood began. Currently, the reservoirs of the Moskvoretsko-Vazuzskaya and Volzhskaya systems are filling up, the water level rises by approximately 7–11 centimeters per day. 80 percent of the useful volume is filled, the free capacity of the Moskvoretskaya system reservoirs is 163 million cubic meters. According to our estimates, they can easily accommodate the entire meltwater flow,” noted Petr Biryukov.
The process of filling reservoirs with water was organized smoothly, which allows avoiding flooding of territories, as well as forming a water reserve and ensuring uninterrupted supply to Moscow.
In anticipation of flood passage and high water, city services implemented a set of preparatory measures. In particular, specialists carried out necessary work on water reservoirs and hydraulic structures and organized snow surveys to assess snow cover parameters. The flood passage regime is continuously adjusted taking into account weather conditions affecting the intensity of snow melt.
During this period, water quality control is also intensified: samples are taken up to four times a day. In addition, to prevent possible contamination of water sources, monitoring is conducted of enterprises and agricultural facilities located in the watershed area.
