UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday called for the development of a global regulatory system for artificial intelligence (AI). Conflict in Sudan
On Monday, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution to conduct an investigation into the catastrophic situation in the Sudanese city of El Obeid and its surroundings. On Friday, the Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the condition of civilians in this area. Meanwhile, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), children continue to bear the brunt of the ongoing war in Sudan. In the first six months of 2026, available data shows that at least 330 children have been killed or injured. According to UNICEF, about 60 percent of them suffered due to drone attacks.
Strikes on Ukraine
The UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, condemned another massive attack by Russian armed forces on Kyiv, which occurred just a few days after a large-scale strike on the capital. As a result of the shelling, civilians were killed and injured. Schmale noted that over the weekend, Sumy region came under fire. Strikes were also carried out on Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, and other regions. This led to new casualties among the civilian population, the destruction of residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, and disruption of access to basic services.
Protection of the civilian population
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on states to strengthen measures to prevent genocide and other international crimes. The report on the implementation of the Responsibility to Protect principle was presented to the General Assembly on behalf of Guterres by the head of his Office, Earl Cortney Rattray. He noted that early signs of mass crimes are too often ignored. The report calls for investing in national mechanisms to prevent atrocities and also confirms the obligation of states to cooperate with affected groups, civil society, regional, and international organizations.
