Vice-Rector for Educational Activities of SPbPU Lyudmila Pankova took part in the expert discussion “Engineering Education and Industry: Practices of Personnel Training for Technological Sovereignty” at the press center of MIC “Izvestia”.
The discussion also involved the rector of Almetyevsk State Technological University “Higher School of Oil” Alexander Dyakonov, the rector of MSTU “STANKIN” Boris Padalkin, the rector of G. I. Nosov MSTU Dmitry Terentyev, the rector of the National Research Moscow State University of Civil Engineering Pavel Akimov, the rector of Kuban State Technological University Igor Lagerev, the CEO of the IPR Group of Companies Natalia Ivanova, the head of the human resources department at PJSC Tatneft Andrey Glazkov, the director of the engineering center of JSC Silovyye Mashiny Konstantin Savichev, and the director of the department for personnel management of the public-law company “Unified Customer in the Construction Sector” Olga Starostina.
Participants discussed the most effective models of interaction between universities and industry that already allow the training of a new generation of specialists today and can be scaled at the federal level: practice-oriented programs such as dual education and corporate master’s programs, the creation of joint engineering centers and laboratories, among others.
Natalia Ivanova, CEO of the IPR Group and an expert in the transformation of the educational environment, presented the results of the study “The Educational Environment of the Future: Students’ Perspective,” which revealed discrepancies between universities and employers. The main conclusion of the experts was that quality workforce training is possible when education and industry operate as a single mechanism. It was these working examples that were analyzed at the “Izvestia” platform.
Thus, at SPbPU, practical training has become the foundation of the entire educational model. Lyudmila Pankova spoke about several aspects of practice-oriented student learning at the university that have proven effective, can be integrated into any educational program, and can be replicated for all universities:
- implementation of disciplines in the form of practical training at enterprises equipped with modern production facilities (“Almaz-Antey”, “Power Machines”, etc.);
- joint corporate educational programs that facilitate seamless employment of students during their studies and help them easily adapt to working at the industrial partner’s premises;
- basic departments that combine education and career support;
- student project work in real production — in particular, within the framework of the network advanced training program “Modern Engineering Practices” from PISH SPbPU “Digital Engineering” and the Kronstadt Engineering Education Center;
- internships for teachers with industrial partners to develop professional competencies;
- project activities of interdisciplinary student teams, including in the format of final qualification works.
A representative of one of SPbPU’s key industrial partners, a Polytech graduate, director of the engineering center at JSC “Power Machines” Konstantin Savichev revealed how well this model meets the needs of the industry, what competencies graduates acquire thanks to immersion in real production projects, and why it is important for enterprises to participate in training engineers while they are still studying, he explained
The engineer of the future is a technological leader who possesses fundamental engineering training, knows modern digital tools, current software, can use artificial intelligence, and has business and production competencies. All this allows the engineer to remain modern and in demand in the current situation, he emphasized.
Overall, the country’s ability to create its own technologies, equipment, and industries depends on how effectively universities and enterprises can jointly train the new generation of specialists.
