Specialists from the Tyumen scientific institute of Rosneft have developed and implemented a method for determining the thermal maturity of the organic matter in rock formations. This parameter helps assess the prospects for oil and gas bearing potential and discover new oil and gas deposits.
The developed approach combines traditional visual studies of coal material samples in the core with quantitative analyses of components using a microscope-photometer. Based on the comparison of the obtained data with the results of other geochemical methods, the institute’s scientists constructed maps showing which oil source rocks currently produce hydrocarbons, which have already exhausted their entire generative potential, and which will begin to yield oil and gas in the future.
A detailed analysis of samples makes it possible to determine the origin of organic matter (continental/marine) and to infer the phase state of hydrocarbons (oil and/or gas).
The prospects for the development of the method are associated with the use of machine learning for automatic recognition of the shades of carbonaceous particles: the darker the shade, the more hydrocarbons have been generated by the organic matter to date.
Rosneft gives priority attention to innovative activities and defines technological leadership as a key factor of competitiveness in the oil market.
