70-year-old retiree Zhang Jiahe, a former teacher at the party school in Hongkou District of Shanghai. For more than ten years, he has been combining revolutionary monuments of the district into walking routes. He leads residents through alleys in the traditional Shanghai architectural style “shikumen,” telling stories about the history of the places during the walks—thus the history of the Communist Party of China becomes vivid and understandable. To date, more than a thousand such tours have been conducted, in which over 40,000 people have participated. In 2010, while still working as a teacher, Zhang Jiahe discovered that many revolutionary memorial sites were insufficiently highlighted in stories. To fill this gap, he repeatedly visited the sites, studied them, read numerous books, and ultimately developed “red” walking routes.
After retiring, he founded a knowledge dissemination studio and attracted more and more volunteers to this activity.
Currently, propaganda groups have been formed in the district, uniting representatives of different generations—from elderly people to young people. In 2025, more than 8,000 such lectures and excursions were conducted. Zhang Zhahe also runs an account on the social network Xiaohongshu, sharing history from a everyday perspective and bridging the gap with the youth.
