Yan Zheng, a general practitioner from the Pengpu community in the Jing’an district of Shanghai, is one of the first doctors to start providing home medical care in Shanghai. For 26 years, he made house calls to patients in all weather conditions. During this time, the doctor completed a total of 49,000 visits and organized 1,337 “bed spaces” for home-bound patients. Copies of 51 apartment keys handed to him by patients are permanently preserved in the National Museum of China.

He conducted consultations with special attention and patience, not only treating patients but also having long conversations with elderly people, helping them with household chores, for which he was considered “one of their own.” He opened an innovative workspace and contributed to the growing professionalism of an increasing number of young family doctors.

“The highest award for me is the recognition of the people,” he says, emphasizing that winning and maintaining the trust of the people is the mission of a communist doctor.
